A common question that we often get asked is if we can do Pantone color matching using a PMS number. The answer is Yes, in a couple different ways.
We do use true 5000k LEDs in our mixing area, if we mix it in house. That means we can view and mix the colors in “real daylight” conditions which is extremely helpful for hitting a color just right. For larger runs where a lot of ink volume is needed, we will probably have another local specialist in Grand Rapids that will mix a larger quantity.
Q. Does it cost extra for PMS Pantone Color Matching?
A. Yes, but not much at all.
Q. Do I need to have PMS numbers to order from you?
A. No. Usually only large corporations or designs that require exact colors for one reason or another need to be matched. You will probably know if you need it or not. Most people don’t need PMS Color Matching to order screen printing from us, they will use general terms to describe the needed colors ( like Red, Black, Purple, etc..) If you think you might, just ask, but odds are against it.
Q. How do you find a PMS Color Number?
A. Usually an artist will encode the color in the file if needed, and will notify you of this if they know it will be screen printed and color matching is required. Grand Rapids is a hub for screen printing and the t shirt industry, and many artists in Grand Rapids will be familiar with these fundamentals. One way is inside Photoshop or Illustrator, is to use the color selection tool along with a built in “Solid” or “Coated” Color Book Pallet that will tell you the PMS equivalent. Keep in mind that *ALL* screens, monitors, phones, tablets, tvs, anything with at screen to view digital things….. WILL vary some in color, and real life color may vary some from what you see on screen. It is usually not enough to matter, but when you are dealing with exact matching – SCREENS ARE BAD.. The second method is to use a Pantone Color Book as shown above. They can be purchased for a few hundred dollars and need to be updated every couple years. They are a handy tool to color match real life items to PMS Numbers for screen printing purposes, and many other print purposes for that matter.
Q. Does it add on extra time to my order’s production time?
A. If a large amount is needed, it might add 1 business day on to the time, but we will let you know if this is the case.
